Live/work just got greener

more about

We all know live/work is the most environmentally friendly way to run a business - no commuting and one premises using energy rather than two. Future live/work developments, however, could be greener still, thanks to the bricks they're made from. A new low-energy brick has been launched by California-based Calstar Products. According to the company, ‘fly ash' bricks save on more than 83 tons of landfill per 100,000 bricks used, along with an equivalent amount of mined raw material.

Spreading the live/work word

more about

Live/work developers and architects who get tired of explaining to people just exactly what the term means might like to take inspiration from the Kansas City chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). The answer, it seems, might simply be to show them. AIA Kansas City recently promoted the live/work lifestyle by laying on a tour of two of its very best spaces. Designed to showcase the highest quality developments, the tour took in two units - one a new construction and one a renovated property.

A live/work change is gonna come

Los Angeles City Council's planning committee has now instructed the city attorney to draft a change in the definition of what constitutes ‘live/work'. The change, which will shift the focus towards the ‘live' side, is designed to bring the ordnance more in line with how the units are actually used, as well as help promote economic activity in a difficult economic climate. Up to now the designation has been two thirds commercial and one third residential, based on the formula for artist in residence units.

Artspace secures "transformative" million dollar funding

Leading live/work developer Artspace has received a grant of $1m from the Ford Foundation to expand its work in creating affordable space for artists. The Minneapolis-based organization already has more than 800 live/work units across the country (link to feature), home to sculptors, print makers, filmmakers, musicians and dancers. The grant will be used to underwrite the pre-development costs of projects that ‘advance cultural diversity and community engagement' by creating or preserving space for artists.

Demand booms in OC

Demand for live/work properties at the Vantis community in Aliso Viejo, Orange County was so great that one potential buyer camped out for 10 days before the sales release in January. Nancy Height managed to buy one of the 41 live/work units at City Walk and has now launched her own hairdressing salon there.
