Live-work units open in downtown Moline

Housing options continue to multiply in downtown Moline, with the latest apartments to open offering something different: 13 “live-work” units on the ground floor in which tenants can operate office-type businesses, with storefront doors opening to River Drive.

The Live Work Home is integrating the concept of social, economic, and environmental sustainability back to Syacuse, New York by building green, reports Evelyn Lee at at Inhabitat.  Designed by Cook + Fox, the concept for the home was to provide a space that is highly adaptable and flexible, making it incredibly efficient programmatically.

Art festival at Space 4 Art

This month sees the 7th annual art festival at Space 4 Art, East Village, San Diego.

Space 4 Art currently provides 30 affordable work studios and 5 affordable work/live studios for 40 of San Diego's finest artists, designers, and craftspeople. The centrally located facility has an abundance of natural light, a spacious gallery, multiple shared community spaces, including an outdoor patio, a performance space, and a classroom.

Obama signs Telework Bill

President Barack Obama has signed a bill designed to encourage the US federal government to make greater use of teleworking.

The Telework Enhancement Act of 2010 aims to increase the number of telecommuters in the federal government by 5%. It was signed into law by President Obama on December 9. The law mandates federal agencies to draw up and implement telecommuting policies.

Pat Quinn said last month that the board of the Illinois Housing Development Authority had committed federal Low-Income Housing Tax Credits to finance a planned creative live/work community in downtown Elgin.The credits, which are the chief financing tool available for developers to build affordable housing in the USA, are expected to raise $8.5 million in private cash for the development.

The wood framing delineating the 12 condominiums has been enough for Robb to envision the production potential of Cherokee's residential units. Robb has adroitly maneuvered construction and building design with an eye to provide future residents live/work units with the acoustical support needed for private recording spaces within each unit.

US housing award recognizes live/work development

A scheme boasting 39 live/work units is a finalist in a US-wide housing award scheme.

"The Crossing" in Anaheim, California, received recognition as an award finalist in several categories of the National Association of Home Builders' 2010 Pillars of Industry awards, including "Best Clubhouse at a Multifamily Community". 

Developed by SARES-REGIS and designed by architects KTGY, the development features 312 lofts and one- and two-bedroom apartment homes as well as the 39 live/work units.

We all know live/work is the most environmentally friendly way to run a business - no commuting and one premises using energy rather than two. Future live/work developments, however, could be greener still, thanks to the bricks they're made from. A new low-energy brick has been launched by California-based Calstar Products. According to the company, ‘fly ash' bricks save on more than 83 tons of landfill per 100,000 bricks used, along with an equivalent amount of mined raw material.
